Ledger.com/start – Your Guide to Secure Crypto Management

Welcome to the world of self-custody and unparalleled security. You've chosen a Ledger device, your personal hardware wallet designed to protect your crypto assets from online threats. This guide will help you unbox, set up, and start using your Ledger device with confidence. Let's begin.

Before You Start: What You'll Need

  1. Your new Ledger Nano X or Ledger Nano S Plus device.

  2. The included USB cable.

  3. A computer or smartphone with an internet connection.

  4. A pen and a secure place to store your recovery phrase. Never use a digital device to store it.

Step 1: Download Ledger Live

Ledger Live is your official companion app to manage your crypto and set up your device.

Step 2: Initialize Your Ledger Device

  1. Connect your device to your computer or phone using the USB cable.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions on your device to choose a PIN code. This PIN protects your device from physical access. Use both buttons to navigate and select digits.

  3. Write down your Recovery Phrase. Your device will generate a unique 24-word recovery phrase. This is the master key to your cryptocurrency.

    • ⚠️ Critical Security Warning:

    • Write the words by hand on the provided recovery sheet.

    • Never take a photo of it or type it on any computer or phone.

    • Store it in a safe, private place. Anyone with this phrase can access your funds.

  4. Confirm your recovery phrase. Your device will ask you to re-select a few words to ensure you've written it down correctly.

Step 3: Install Apps and Add Accounts

  1. Open Ledger Live and follow the onboarding prompts.

  2. Go to the "My Ledger" tab within the app. It will automatically detect your connected device.

  3. Install "Apps" (blockchains) for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage. For example, install the Bitcoin app to manage BTC. These apps are small and allow your device to support many different coins.

  4. Go to the "Accounts" tab and click "Add account" to create a secure wallet for each cryptocurrency. Ledger Live will derive your public addresses.

Step 4: Receive Your First Crypto

  1. In Ledger Live, go to the account you want to fund (e.g., Bitcoin).

  2. Click "Receive".

  3. Verify the address on your Ledger device's screen. This is crucial to ensure no malware is altering the address on your computer.

  4. Once confirmed, use this address to send crypto from an exchange or another wallet.
